The American Physical Society, founded in 1899, selects Fellows each year to recognize members who have significantly advanced the study of physics. Interim Vice President Michael Jackson (Academic Affairs) has been selected for this distinct honor.

The citation reads: “For serving as a co-chair in the effort to develop and complete the inaugural version of the Effective Practices for Physics Programs (EP3) Guide that is actively aiding physics departments in their work to improve undergraduate physics education.”

Jackson was nominated by the APS Forum on Education. The Fellowship Program recognizes members of APS, no more than one-half of one percent of the Society's membership, who have made advances through research and publication, or by making innovative contributions to the teaching of physics, or service and participation in the Society.

As Jackson said, "I have been fortunate to help co-lead this community driven effort and it is immensely humbling to receive this honor. We just hosted NMT's Exploration Day where we reiterated the importance of a college education and the doors they open — even though the specifics of one's future career are unknown. This is yet another example of opportunities and recognition that have come along in my career that I had never even considered when applying to college"

Jackson is also a Fellow of the American Association of Physics Teachers and recipient of their David Halliday and Robert Resnick Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching.
